Sure enough, a scary night-time encounter with Jack Door soon follows and Robert discovers the eponymous Moonlocket. Somehow, at this point in the story you just know that Lily and Robert are going to become entangled with the notorious jewel thief!
When Professor Hartman receives a letter from Queen Victoria asking him to repair her mechanical elephant he sets off for London, leaving the children in the care of the mechanicals, Miss Tock, Mr Wingnut and Lily’s loyal friend Malkin, a mechanical fox. We quickly realise that Robert is still mourning his father, he regularly visits the burned out shell of Townsend’s Horologists, and is desperately trying to trace his mother who disappeared when he was only three years old. Lily and her father, the greatest inventor in the country, Professor John Hartman are living back at Brackenbridge Manor, also living with them is Robert Townsend whose father was killed whilst helping Lily in the original Cogheart adventure. The book’s prologue describes the daring escape from prison of a famous jewel thief, Jack Door aka Jack of Diamonds, so that he can retrieve the famous Blood Moon Diamond that he stole fifteen years previously.
This is the second book in the Cogheart series by Peter Bunzl and once again we are immersed in the totally believable steam-punk setting of Victorian England that he created in Book 1.
